Environment

Environmental management has become a strategic priority for the Port Authority. In this section, we aim to show the actions carried out by the Environment Unit. The main aims of these actions are:

  • Improving air quality in the port area.
  • Rationing the consumption of resources used in port activities.
  • Keeping the waters around the port in good condition.
  • Correctly managing the waste produced in the port and encouraging recycling.
  • Proposing corrective actions and measures to diminish possible environmental impacts.

THESE ARE SOME OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS CARRIED OUT IN THE PAST OR PRESENT

Environmental Diagnosis:

When tackling environmental management in the port, it is essential to know the situation of the port in relation to its surroundings. And so, in 2005 and 2006, the Port Authority, in conjunction with FEPORTS (Port Institute Foundation of Studies and Cooperation in the Region of Valencia), carried out an environmental diagnosis of the whole port, analysing all aspects and impacts. The results of this diagnosis were used to draw up an Environment Plan putting forward the environmental actions to be undertaken in 2010.

Waste separation:

The generation of waste is currently one of the biggest environmental problems facing society, mainly because of the impact created by rubbish dumps, incinerators, etc. The Port Authority is aware of this and so has set up recycling points for different kinds of waste so that paper, packaging, glass etc., does not end up in the dump but instead is reused and revalued.

Recycled paper:

The consumption of resources is another environmental aspect the Port Authority is trying to control in order to minimise the impact of its activity. And so it decided that as of 2006 at least 10% of the paper used must be recycled.

Ecoports: EcoPorts

ECOPORTS is a network of European ports, of which the Port of Alicante is a member, concerned with improving environmental management. The ECOPORTS project was launched in 2002 with a view to exchanging solutions for the environmental problems faced by European ports. Over time, 150 European ports and terminals have become involved in this environmental network, where they exchange experiences with a view to reducing the impact of port activity on the environment. More information is available at: www.ecoports.com.

Environmental Management System:

Certificado de verificación medioambientalThe Port of Alicante has been awarded the PERS (Port Environmental Review System) environmental certificate endorsed by the Lloyd’s Register certification agency.

The implementation of the PERS involves launching an environmental management system in the port with a view to preventing and minimising possible negative impacts on the environment.

The project has involved carrying out a diagnosis of activities, reviewing management system documentation, reviewing environmental aspects and impacts, and identifying and complying with environmental legislation.

PUBLICATIONS

Good Environmental Practices Manual: Ports are infrastructures that, due to their location, interact closely with the environment. Furthermore, the activities carried out there can be very different in nature and, therefore, generate different kinds of environmental impacts. Having analysed all the activities that take place in the Port of Alicante, a Good Practices Manual has been drafted to provide anyone carrying out any activity in the port with a tool permitting them to work in an environmentally friendly way.
